Music by The Piano Brothers

Jean Carter passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 14, 2018, at the Haven Skilled Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

Born on February 26, 1931, she was the daughter of Arthur and Jessie Brenize Koch. The family moved to San Diego, CA, in 1939 and returned to Lock Haven in 1945. Jean graduated from Lock Haven High School in 1948 and had the distinction of being the first female drum major. She worked at the New York and Pennsylvania Company (Hammermill Paper Company) for 44 years retiring in 1992. During those years she made many lifelong friends. For 14 years she was married to Walter F. Carter and became stepmother to Michael and Larry. When the St. Luke’s Reformed Church was destroyed by the 1972 flood, she became a member of Great Island Presbyterian Church where she served as elder and sang with the choir for 37 years. Jean was an avid reader and enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing cards with friends and with the Senior Circle groups, and occasional bus trips to casinos.

After her retirement, she became an active volunteer with meals-on-wheels, the Ross Library, the American Cancer Society Relay for Life and Daffodil Days, the Red Cross bloodmobile, and the visiting nurses flu shot program.

She is survived by cousins, dear friends, and her “family”, Leslie Smith and children Kyle (Lauren) Smith, Jeremy (Caroline) Smith, and Megan (Robert) Tunon and Rachel (Thane) Turner and children Ellen (Benjamin) Zerbe, Avery, Caleb, and Benjamin. She filled the lives of those who knew and loved her with kindness, humor and optimism. She was predeceased by her parents and stepsons, Larry and Michael.

A service to celebrate Jean’s life will be held Friday, October 19, 2018 at 11:00 AM in the Yost-Gedon Funeral Home & Cremation Services, LLC , 121 W. Main St., Lock Haven.
